What 2024 Toyota Models Are Ideal for Going Off-Road?
March 15 2024 - Jen Cook
An orange 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is shown off-road after leaving a Toyota dealership.

Off-road traversal has exploded in recent years among more general vehicle shoppers. It’s easy to see the uptick in interest from both the dedicated and wider automotive market when it comes to off-roading. But if you’re a fan of Toyota vehicles in particular and have been scouting through your local Toyota dealership for a 2024 model tuned for off-roading, you might be wondering which models are right for the job.

It can be easy to think that any trim with “Off-Road” in its name might be what you should go with, but there are levels to off-road traversal that are important to note for the kind of off-roading you plan to do with your Toyota. So this will be a quick guide on which models are good for going off-road and the level of skill they aim to satisfy within the consumer shopping market. This way you can use this as a way to help find the right model for your specific level of off-road enthusiasm.

2024 Toyota Models Built To Go Off-Road

There is a difference between off-road models and off-road trims. Some vehicles are designed specifically from the ground up for off-road traversal, while others are designed to fulfill certain features and functionality within the segment via available off-road trims. This makes a fairly significant difference between those simply looking for a daily driver, a commuter, or a family vehicle with some off-road capabilities. The models listed below are all Toyota models capable of going off-road and have available trims designed around off-road traversal.

  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Toyota Sequoia
  • Toyota Sienna
  • Toyota Tacoma
  • Toyota Tundra

The list is not short, and this gives those shopping for a 2024 Toyota plenty of options, with some being more off-road tuned than others. Of course, nothing is stopping you from taking any Toyota model and modifying the suspension, the drivetrain, exhaust, wheels, and tires to accommodate some off-roading. But if you’re looking for specific Toyota models that are already pre-packaged for off-roading, the list above gives you an idea of which models are already configured for some form of off-roading without having to completely re-workshop the vehicle to suit your needs.

2024 Toyota Off-Road Trims And What They Mean

Toyota has specific trims that indicate that they are designed for off-road use. This is usually indicated with the simple trim nomenclature of the TRD. This means the trim is designed for higher-performance activity since it relates to the Toyota Racing Development division. Now, racing and off-road performance are two different disciplines, but they are still very similar and have a lot of commonalities. But overall, if there is a model with a TRD trim, it usually means that the model is designed to accommodate some level of off-road activity, especially models that have specific TRD Off-Road trims, which means that they are specifically designed with the DNA of motorsports and the musculature of off-road performance in mind.

Toyota 4Runner

This midsize SUV has four TRD trims, starting with the TRD Sport, an introductory sports-themed trim for the 4Runner. You can still tackle some light off-roading trails thanks to the enhanced X-REAS sport suspension tuning and the available part-time four-wheel drive capabilities. It’s a sport trim, first and foremost, but it is also capable of some very light off-roading.

The other two – the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium – are both designed to offer more hardcore off-roading features, such as standard part-time four-wheel drive, a front skid plate, Hill Start Assist Control, an electronic locking rear differential, and Crawl Control with Multi-Terrain Select for tackling a variety of terrain. The top-of-the-line 4Runner is the TRD Pro, which features high-performance suspension with FOX shocks, an off-road roof rack, and a specially stamped front skid plate.

Toyota Land Cruiser

This model has always been designed for off-road traversal thanks to its history of being an off-road military-focused vehicle. That lineage has carried through its generations as a consumer SUV that still has strong roots with rugged off-roading. The new generation Land Cruiser is designed entirely around off-road adventuring. Powered by the turbocharged 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine, the Land Cruiser is available in three trim formats, all designed to be taken off-road.

This includes a sway-bar disconnect, electronically locking rear and center differential, Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control, and up to 6,000 lbs of towing capacity when properly equipped. The 2024 Land Cruiser is designed to be a complete hybrid off-road crossover SUV for serious off-road and overlanding enthusiasts.

Toyota RAV4

This is a compact crossover and one of Toyota’s best-selling SUVs ever. Due to its wide availability and versatility, you can get it in a number of different trim formats, including casual daily driver trims, as well as casual off-road trims, and more serious off-road trims. The RAV4 isn’t available with four-wheel drive, but it does have a very capable all-wheel drive configuration for some form of off-roading.

The RAV4 Adventure trim perfectly encapsulates a casual off-road trim, which features Dynamic Torque Vectoring in all-wheel drive, independent front suspension with a stabilizer bar, and the Multi-Terrain Select. The Hybrid Woodland Edition also comes with similar features but with Falken WILDPEAK all-terrain tires and front and rear mudguards. The TRD Off-Road features everything the other trims come with but with an off-road-tuned suspension and a TRD-stamped stainless steel skid plate.

Toyota Sequoia

For 2024, this full-size is a full-on hybrid full-size SUV. Even still, the full-size SUV offers an off-road option in the form of the TRD Pro. The eight-seater is powered by the twin-turbocharged V6 i-Force Max hybrid powertrain that enables it to tow up to 9,520 lbs when properly equipped. With the TRD Pro, it comes with 18-inch BBS forged alloy aluminum wheels tucked inside off-road ready Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. It also features a TRD-tuned off-road suspension with FOX shocks and an electronically locking rear differential. The TRD Pro is the only off-road option for the Sequoia.

Toyota Sienna

This minivan has a very limited set of off-roading features because it’s designed more for families and daily driving. However, there is the option for doing some very light and casual off-roading in the form of the Sienna Woodland Edition. While it doesn’t have the four-wheel drive or high ground clearance as some of the other Toyota TRD-themed vehicles, the Woodland Edition does offer electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, slightly increased ground clearance, up to 3,500 lbs worth of towing, and is available with roof rails with crossbars and a 1,500-watt inverter for a 120-volt AC outlet for powering your devices.

Toyota Tacoma

This midsize truck is designed for all types of driving disciplines so that you can get it in four dedicated off-road trims. This includes the TRD PreRunner, which is a good entry-level off-road truck featuring a leaf-spring rear suspension, a lifted front suspension for increased ground clearance and approach angles, and an electronically locking rear differential for improved traction control. The TRD Off-Road adds a few more features, including a composite skid plate, Bilstein monotube shocks with remote reservoirs, Multi-Terrain Select, and an available front stabilizer bar disconnect.

The Tacoma Trailhunter is a hardcore off-road, Baja-ready truck with Old Man Emu forged monotube dynamic shocks, a high-clearance front bumper, a special high-mounted air intake, frame-mounted rocker rails, a sports bar, and a skid plate. The TRD Pro is the top-of-the-line off-road trim with specially designed forged aluminum control arms, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, special TRD-themed wheels, lifted suspension, FOX internal bypass QS3 shocks with remote reservoirs, and IsoDynamic performance front seats with dynamic damping.

Toyota Tundra

This truck is only available with one off-road trim, the TRD Pro. While you could make an argument for the Capstone, 1794 Edition or SR5 being off-road compatible, the reality is that those are more themed around luxury and utility rather than off-roading. The TRD Pro, however, is all about off-roading, coming equipped with a 1.1-inch front lift, Falken WILDPEAK all-terrain tires, a TRD Pro off-road tuned suspension with FOX shocks, an electronically locking rear differential, and a skid plate. The trim is designed for those who want a serious off-road truck with four-wheel drive, good ground clearance, and plenty of power to boot from the 3.4-liter i-FORCE twin-turbo V6.

So, Which Model Best Fits Your Needs?

So, which off-road 2024 Toyota model and trim is right for you? If you need a good family vehicle that will be used for some occasional outdoor activities by the lake, the Sienna Woodland Edition is the perfect casual, entry-level trim for families. If you want something light and affordable, the RAV4 Adventure is the way to go. It’s a compact crossover SUV that is affordable, and feature-rich SUV, while the Adventure trim is good for those dabbling in off-roading for the first time. If you’re more serious about your off-road adventures, such as outdoor camping or hiking in remote or difficult-to-reach areas, then the RAV4 TRD Pro is likely your better option.

For those looking for a slightly more serious off-road vehicle for the family with plenty of space, cargo volume, and utility, then the 4Runner TRD trims are the solution. The 4Runner is large enough for families, and the TRD line offers different levels of off-roading skills, from beginners to experts. The Sequoia, however, is another good option for those who want an off-road rich utility vehicle for a large family. However, if you’re all about overlanding and trekking into uneven topography, the Land Cruiser is the ultimate rugged SUV from Toyota for those purposes.

And, of course, if you’re a beginner, intermediate, or expert in off-roading, each of the different scaled options available for the Toyota Tacoma fits the skill level of different drivers. Being a midsize truck also makes it a little easier to handle than some of the larger vehicles. The Toyota Tundra, however, has an all-or-nothing approach to off-roading with the TRD Pro. If you know you want a tow-ready, off-road-ready, utility-rich full-size, light-duty pickup, then the Tundra TRD Pro is your model and trim of choice.
